What is it?

It is part of the national contest sponsored by AMATYC, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

When is it?

  • There are two tests.
  • Round 1 is usually around Oct. 31.
  • Round 2 is usually around Feb. 28.
  • A student can participate in just one round, or in both.
  • The test usually takes place on a Friday between 11 am and 12 noon.
  • → Look for fliers posted in and around classrooms in the MS Building.

Where is it?

Usually in one of the classrooms in the MS Building on the Panorama campus.

Who can enter?

Any student without a two-year degree.

What is it based on?

Precalculus and lower level classes--plus a good deal of logic.

Can you use a Graphing Calculator?

Yes, but nothing with a keyboard. The TI-83, TI-84 and TI-89 are all ok. The TI-92, is not allowed. You may store formulas in your calculator, like trigonometric identities and formulas for the conic sections (circles, parabolas, hyperbolas and ellipses).

Is there a prize?

A list of the annual winners at BC is maintained in the display case in MS 107. AMATYC also gives awards for national winners. And sometimes instructors at BC take up a collection for local prizes.

Can you get copies of old exams?

Yes. Go to the AMATYC website.

Where is the Website?

The AMATYC website.

On the website you will find the following buttons.

  • Competition Questions has copies of old exams.
  • Past Results will give the national rankings of individual students as well as the college rankings. (College rankings are based on the sum of the scores of the top 5 students from the school.)

Will there be practice sessions?

Check with the Math Club.
