EMLS Course Information

EMLS B1A - Expository Composition

This college-level writing course focuses on critical reading, writing, and thinking while also addressing the specific language and cultural needs of non-native speakers of English. Students will review and apply standard conventions of writing that include audience awareness, thesis formation, structure, organization, word choice, grammatical control, and rigorous attention to academic formats, conventions, and expectations. Students will also read and analyze a variety of societal, academic, and literary texts representing culturally diverse perspectives. Writing assignments include expository and argumentative texts that respond to a variety of rhetorical situations and contexts and incorporate college-level research (totaling at least 6,000 words).   1. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able critically evaluate the relevance and the credibility of sources, both in print and online.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to synthesize sources in a correctly documented research paper.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to write expository and argumentative/persuasive essays that reflect an orderly research and writing process, follow MLA conventions in terms of formatting and citations, and show evidence of drafting, revision, and editing to reflect an academic style and tone.
  4. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to write multi draft and timed in class essays exhibiting acceptable college-level control of mechanics, organization, development, and coherence.

EMLS B50/EMLS B50NC - Introduction to College Composition

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need to develop their skills in composition and persuasion as well as comprehension and analysis of reading. Stresses both organization and in-depth essay development as well as critical thinking. Prepares students for ENGL B1A. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B50 or ENSL B1.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to write expository essays of 500-750 words that successfully synthesize at least two outside sources, including non-fiction, using a variety of rhetorical modes, and demonstrate familiarity with MLA format.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills by analyzing professional, academic, and/or literary texts, including online sources, written for native English speakers.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate adequate command of sentence structure, academic vocabulary, and standard conventions of written English.

EMLS B51/EMLS B51NC - Advanced Reading

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need to improve reading comprehension and build vocabulary in English. Emphasis is on identifying main ideas, summarizing, inferring, analyzing, drawing comparisons, and developing more advanced vocabulary by reading complex academic and literary texts. Prepares students for college level reading. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B52.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to analyze a wide range of personal, professional, academic, and/or literary non-adapted/authentic texts, including online sources, written for native English speakers.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to summarize, paraphrase, and respond to academic readings.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to use academic vocabulary in their own writing.

EMLS B52/EMLS B52 NC - Advanced Communication Skills

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need prescriptive training in pronunciation, stress and intonation in spontaneous speech. Development of oral communication skills through formal presentations and debates. Analysis of lectures, arguments, and academic discussions. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B22.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify main ideas and select relevant details of lectures and other authentic discourse.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to analyze and synthesize information relevant to global events, present arguments, and/or defend theses.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to collaborate with peers by preparing group projects, presentations.

EMLS B60/EMLS B60NC - Basic Writing Skills

Recommended for international and multilingual students at the advanced level of English who require grammar and composition skills necessary to take essay exams, improve personal and professional writing, or prepare for EMLS B50 or ENGL B50. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B60.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to compose well-organized in-class and multiple draft essays of 350-400 words that include effective introductions, thesis statements, supporting details, and conclusions.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to read and demonstrate comprehension and analysis of at least one book length work of fiction or non-fiction.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to use a variety of sentence structures, and demonstrate editing skills that reduce global errors.

EMLS B61/EMLS B61NC - Intermediate Reading

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need to improve reading comprehension and build vocabulary in English. Emphasis is on identifying main ideas, summarizing, making inferences, and developing vocabulary, using more complex academic reading selections than in EMLS B71. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B51 or ACDV B61 or ACDV B62.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills by summarizing and analyzing pre-collegiate readings from a range of disciplines.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to make inferences from and respond to readings.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to comprehend and utilize academic vocabulary based on the reading selections.

EMLS B62/EMLS B62NC - Intermediate Communication Skills

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need communication and pronunciation skills. Emphasis is on critical listening skills, oral presentations, class discussions, and pronunciation practice. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B21.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate intelligible speaking skills.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify the main idea, important details, and implied meaning in samples of authentic English.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate critical thinking and speaking skills by making presentations and analyzing relevant topics in small and large groups.

EMLS B70/EMLS B70NC - Grammar and Composition

Recommended for international and multilingual students at the high-intermediate level of English who require grammar and composition skills necessary to take essay exams, improve personal written communication, or prepare for EMLS B60. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B70 or ENSL B3.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to respond to a given topic by writing one or more well-organized paragraphs using a topic sentence, cohesive devices, logical sequencing, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to write sentences that include correct verb forms and tenses.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to comprehend and utilize academic vocabulary based on the reading selections.

EMLSB71/EMLS B71NC - Basic Reading

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need to improve reading comprehension and build their vocabulary in English. Emphasis is on identifying main ideas, summarizing, making inferences, developing vocabulary, and using academic language. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B61.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to comprehend and utilize academic vocabulary based on the reading selections.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify main ideas and supporting details in adapted reading passages, and analyze the relationship among ideas in adapted reading passages.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to read and demonstrate comprehension and analysis of at least one book length work of fiction or non-fiction.

EMLSB72/EMLS B72NC - Basic Communication Skills

Recommended for international and multilingual students who need to improve their listening and speaking skills in small groups as well as in larger settings. The focus is on improving pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and stress patterns as well as listening comprehension in small group settings and classroom lectures. Note: Not open to students who have successfully completed ENSL B71CD.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate comprehensible speech in presentations and in-class discussions.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify main ideas and supporting details in non-adapted lectures.

EMLSB90NC - Introductory Integrated English Skills

This course provides practice in learning the patterns of spoken and written American English through the study of English pronunciation, conversation strategies, related grammar, writing, and spelling at an introductory level of proficiency, with the concentration on oral communication and listening.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify a few key words and phrases in oral communications and simple spoken and written texts.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to present simple information.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in short conversations and written exchanges about familiar topics and in familiar contexts.

EMLSB91NC - Basic Integrated English Skills

This course provides practice in learning the patterns of spoken and written American English through the study of English pronunciation, conversation strategies, related grammar, writing, and spelling at an introductory level of proficiency, with the concentration on oral communication and listening.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify the main topic in oral presentations and simple spoken and written texts.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in short conversations and written exchanges about familiar topics and texts.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to deliver short oral presentations.

EMLSB92NC - Pre-Intermediate Integrated English Skills

This course provides practice in learning the patterns of spoken and written American English through the study of English pronunciation, conversation strategies, related grammar, writing, and spelling at a pre-intermediate level of proficiency, with the concentration on oral communication and listening.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to determine a central idea or theme in oral presentations and spoken and written texts.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in conversations, discussions, and written exchanges about familiar topics, texts, and issues.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to develop a topic with a few details and deliver short oral presentations.

EMLSB93NC - Intermediate Integrated English Skills

This course provides practice in learning the patterns of spoken and written American English through the study of English pronunciation, conversation strategies, related grammar, writing, and spelling at an introductory level of proficiency, with the concentration on oral communication and listening.

  1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in conversations, discussions, and written exchanges about a range of topics, texts, and issues.
  2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to summarize a text.
  3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to deliver oral presentations and integrate graphics or multimedia when useful.
