Health & Safety Resources

Many health and safety issues can affect our students and our college communities. Below are several resources to seek help or advice for these topics.

Drinking Alcohol

College drinking brings a range of difficult physical, mental, and social challenges to our students and college members. These can include doing poorly in classes, increases in health problems, assault and sexual assault, and even death.

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism provides more information on college drinking.

If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol use, here are some resources. If you believe someone has overdosed on alcohol, call 911.

Safety Handbook

Every year, College Safety compiles a safety publication that students and college community members can keep for reference. The Safety Handbook gives an overview of ways to keep yourself and others safe while on campus.

Sexual Harassment & Sexual Assault

Bakersfield College takes serious all forms of sexual assault and sexual harassment, including dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, abuse, etc. All college employees have a duty to report these types of crimes. Bakersfield College also has local, state, and federal law obligations to stop the misconduct, address its affects, educate our communities, and provide prevention measures.

If one of these related offenses has occurred to you or someone you know at Bakersfield College, contact College Safety at (661) 395-4554.

For more information and resources on how to identify, educate, and respond to these types of offenses, see information regarding Sexual Misconduct & Title IX.

Request Records From College Safety

Occasionally, people will need to request records from College Safety, like copies of reports taken by Officers. Bakersfield College follows State and Federal laws, regulations, and guidelines for records requests, especially how those requests pertain to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Persons requesting records should provide government-issued identification that includes a photo to ensure they are authorized to receive the requested records. Although FERPA does provide certain exceptions, generally, the only person authorized to request and obtain student records is the student or person for whom the records pertain.

All requests are processed in the order that they are received. It may take up to thirty (30) days to process records requests. Reasonable response times may be shorter or longer depending upon a number of factors. Those factors may include (but are not limited to) the complexity of the request, time necessary to conduct a search and review of the request, etc.
