Reserve Collection
Instructors are welcome to bring copies of their course textbooks, packets, articles, or other materials to the library to be placed in the reserve collection. The library doesn't purchase textbooks for reserve. Students can check out reserve titles for two hours for use in the library only. To place an item on reserve, bring it to the Library Circulation Desk (library main entrance level) and provide us the course title and instructor name. Books will be returned to the instructor upon request.
Library Orientations
Instructors can request orientations for their classes to familiarize students with library services, resources, and any aspect of library research. Orientations can be customized to fit instructor and student needs. Orientations can be done face-to-face in the library classroom (L217), over Zoom, or pre-recorded for asynchronous courses. The capacity of classroom L217 is 25. Though we prefer classes come to the library for orientation, we may be able to send a librarian to the classroom if there are more than 25 students in the class. Regardless of location, we require that the instructor be with their class during the orientation. To request an orientation, complete the online request form.
Library Research Skills Workshops
The library offers a series of research skills workshops every semester. These are not offered face-to-face, but over Zoom. Each workshop is 1 hour long and includes an assignment. If you require students to complete one or more workshops for extra credit, we will email you a list of all your students who attended and what workshop(s) they completed, shortly after the workshop series concludes.
The workshops are also available as Canvas module self-paced tutorials. To add a workshop to your Canvas course, simply search for “Bakersfield College Library” in the Canvas Commons. You can then import any of the workshop modules to your course. As students complete the 5-question quiz at the end of the module, their score will be added to your Canvas gradebook.
The content of the workshops is also available in LibGuide form. These can be read by students independent of Zoom or Canvas, but don't include any type of assessment.

Openly Available Sources
Instructors interested in investigating open educational resources (OER) for textbooks or course resources can use the Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) offered by SUNY Geneseo's Milne Library, as well as LibreTexts.
Interlibrary Loan
Unfortunately, the library has no budget for interlibrary loan and most lending academic libraries will not allow individual faculty to pay the interlibrary loan fees. However, if there is a particular article or book you're in need of, contact any of the librarians and we will look into possibilities for acquiring the item. We may even be able to purchase titles you need for addition to the regular library collection.
