Transfer Exploration

Student with Cal State Fullerton pennant.

Identifying your college goals is extremely important in your transfer process. As a transfer student, you should prioritize identifying your career/major and the 4-year university you would like to attend. Identifying these early can help your pathway advisor or counselor create a personalized education plan to help you reach your goals in a timely manner.

Select GE (IGETC, CSU Breadth, BC General Ed) Linked to GE patterns

Selecting a general education pattern is key in planning a timely transfer plan. There are 3 different education patterns you can pick from at Bakersfield College: IGETC, CSU Breadth, BC General Education. If you are unsure what pattern is best for you, meet with an advisor to discuss your options. Make a Starfish Appointment

  • IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) is appropriate for students who intend to transfer to the UC, CSU, HBCU or AICCU system.
    • If you are unsure where you would like to transfer, IGETC may be the best option.
  • CSU Breadth is appropriate for students who intend to transfer to the California State University system.
  • BC General Education is appropriate for students who do not intend to transfer and only plan on obtaining an associate's degree.
    • If you are planning on transferring, you should NOT be part of this general education pattern.

Choosing a Major

  1. First you should learn about yourself through career assessments, interest profiles, etc. This can be done through a few websites, here are some recommendations: The Personal and Career Exploration Pathway puts on several major/career exploration workshops a year. Visit their website if you are interested in attending their workshops!
  2. Explore Careers that you are interested in.
    • Take your time when researching careers that interest you. Focus on the key factors that may be important to you. Ex: What is the annual salary for each career ? What is the work-life balance like? What is the career outlook? What degree is required for the career? What are the pros and cons?
  3. Choose a Major
    • After thoroughly thinking about your career, look into what majors relate to that career. Once you are ready, declare your major
